Jesus came to me and said I choose you I told him that I hadn’t got nothing to lose So we walk and talk and he’s teaching me his ways And I must admit I’ve seen you following him too And it might be none of my business but I must intrude And ask if we could walk together always We’d be stepping along the straight and narrow Carrying each other’s joy and sorrows Walking hand in hand, we’ll be heavenbound Til our love arrives and the clouds come down Well the devil wants to break what’s good in half And the rest of us are left to make the best of the aftermath Three-fold cord don’t break easy He can’t break us and Jesus While we’re stepping along the straight and narrow Carrying each other’s joy and sorrows Walking hand in hand, we’ll be heavenbound Til our love arrives and the clouds come down While we’re stepping along the straight and narrow Carrying each other’s joy and sorrows I want you for my whole life, won’t you tell me that you’d be my wife

Chemical 03:31
Best of the best say “you chemical mess, give your head a rest from your heaven stress” Cool kids kicking down commitments, it’s not permanent, you can always quit. A covenant is not a contract Marry me, yeah, marry me True love in spite of sirens will Carry me, yeah, carry me, Through the thicket of w-wild winds Spring, summer, fall, winter, winter Seasons won’t change this sinner, sinner Though my feelings may lose their leaves and say goodbye I’ll love, love, love you til I die. General public kicking their pops Men are merely mental cephalopods Screens scream that women are mine For my eyes to sell and buy Imago Dei Marry me, yeah, marry me True love in spite of sirens will Carry me, yeah, carry me, Through the thicket of w-wild winds Spring, summer, fall, winter, winter Seasons won’t change this sinner, sinner Though my feelings may lose their leaves and say goodbye I’ll love, love, love you til I die. Goodness, please don’t quantify to chemicals your human kind. Can’t you see we’re kinda comin’ undone, your chemicals they burn me up.

Pity be upon the strong and those who know they've got it all You don't Build your castles nice and high You'll never know of love's goodbye You won't You'll finally be all alone You’ve used all your mortar and stone put your ear on the glass jar against the wall Not a sound, not a sigh Not wanting you to waste your breath on me but please forgive me before love's goodbye A wise man told "guard against your greed" It'll fill your life with pretty things Life does not consist an in abundance of posessions it don't You'll finally be all alone You’ve used all your mortar and stone put your ear on the glass jar against the wall Not a sound, not a sigh Not wanting you to waste your breath on me but please forgive me before love's goodbye Life, it don’t consist in an abundance of possesions If you keep your soul in brick in stone 65 degrees, a pretty permanant home Keep it out of the sun and it’ll become rubble in your homegrown catacomb

Quicksand 04:15
Swallowed by a choice to stand On no hard rock but on quicksand Enveloped in a dark, wet dust Our footing got the best of us oh, oh, oh, swallowed Sunrays beat a burning tune Vultures dance with fork and spoon A mockery of my demise He that cannot move he dies oh, oh, oh, swallowed Don’t come around If you’re only into hanging with cool souls None to be found in this lil pit I’ve made my own But if you’re into saving the broken, repentent I’m your man Take my hand Step on in to this quicksand oh, oh, oh, swallowed Somewhere along the path I’ve gone wrong ways I seen the signs, yet crossed the line of no escape I can’t get out I can’t get out I’m stuck in this sin I was a fool for befriending those little packs of foxes, rats, they called me deeper in oh, oh, oh, swallowed

These Missouri falls call me away To pasts, tomorrows, todays Melancholy colors cover trees Too scared to show what's bare beneath I was a fool to think that I could hide behind these leaves Unaware that you find foes and befriend your enemies The eyes of yours don't blink when I exit the trees Lord says, "My boy, my Ben, come back to me" Lunar cycles spin the seas around Despite tight ships, man's plans all run aground Folly, I went and built a boat of pine Thinking I'd hide from your mercies, oh my Seasons changing, seas are raging Your moon and wind keep on spinning All my leaves are gone from your weathering winds I'm a villain, no melanin on skeleton Avoiding eye lock with my God, oh my God
6.
Two hearts turn to one Father above Who gently calls in love Turn your eyes to the light, be satisfied By peace and joy found in Christ Slowly, surely, His love becomes our own Though we’re dirtied by sin that we can’t atone He overlooks our stains, Giving us new names No guilt, no shame, Our Father washes clean Two hearts turn away, the problem of pain Leaves us with naught but faith Take my hand and walk straight through the dark Led by the light of Christ Slowly, Surely His path becomes our own Though we’re dirtied by roads we’ve travelled alone He forgives our past Old sins have been cast away, We’re given new names Our Father washes clean Slowly, surely, His love becomes our own Though we’re dirtied by sin that we can’t atone He overlooks our stains, Giving us new names No guilt, no shame, Our Father washes clean

Forgiveness is an elephant who's attempting to forget A grey and grizzled past that's grown heavy on his back His wrinkled skin worn thin by circuses and sin Years of tent revival replayed, rewind, playback Nay, nay, I won't suffocate What you meant for pain will see the daybreak I traded hell for heaven I’ve seen what love can do I’ll live as one who’s been forgiven And I’ll give the same to you Healing what’s been wrong Is restoration’s song I’ll live as one who’s been forgiven And I’ll give the same to you Forgiveness is an enlisted young man come back from Nam Who can't un-see those bloody scenes or wipe napalm off his hands What damnations against nations, the chasm between us is sorrily spacious For this home town hero who's met with nothing less than a face full of toothy allegations No no I won’t hold on What evil has done will see the dawn I traded hell for heaven I’ve seen what love can do I’ll live as one who’s been forgiven And I’ll give the same to you Healing what’s been wrong Is restoration’s song I’ll live as one who’s been forgiven And I’ll give the same to you Bitterness will eat you from the inside Vengeance, that parasite eat you alive One piece of your soul, one bite at a time You think you can fight that which takes no surivors But come to me, you vengeful, weary And I will replace revenge with grace

Land of amber waves, a past paved with both blood and peace both greed and grace Headboards and headstones of cradles and graves, oh the price we’ve paid I’m implicated but in denial that my passion for progress has become my idol I’m of inconsequence, a resident, but if this is my home, who’s responsible for it You’re both and, Beauty, decay A luminous lighthouse A den of dismay You’re both and, righteous and wrong A corrupted courthouse Singing justice songs Sweet, sweet america My home sweet home Like Samson’s haircut, I let you go I never turned my heart to my neighbor Never set it free Sweet, sweet, america I’m sorry Lady Liberty, calling come with me Ya’ll beggars and bums, c’mon and be someone But the queen’s copper dress has gone green Now equating riches with identity You’re life’s not found in your payroll, entitled opulence is gonna burn a hole Through your pocket, your wallet, your leather billfold, Careful what you carry, it could break your soul You’re both and, Beauty, decay Illuminous lighthouse A den of dismay You’re both and, righteous and wrong A corrupted courthouse Singing justice songs Sweet, sweet america My home sweet home Like Samson’s haircut, I let you go I never turned my heart to my neighbor Never set it free Sweet, sweet, america I’m sorry A-M-E-R-I-C-A Your country begins in your own backyard A-M-E-R-I-C-A Your country begins in your own red and blue heart A-M-E-R-I-C-A Your country belongs to your next door neighbor A-M-E-R-I-C-A Your depends on your own love labors Sweet, sweet, America My father's home Like Samson's haircut, I let you go I got comfortable and complacent In my apathy Sweet, sweet, America, I'm sorry

Sin No More 04:39
These small soldier’s fields are near healing Still his heart’s holding loose ends and woundings He’ll be the last to say that he’s not in need of change The sin in his soul’s before him everyday Love til your heart’s sore Pull foes up off the floor No other way to go and sin no more Love enemies in war Forgive though hurt before No other way to go and sin no more Just dust devils spinning and fighting the wind Crusted creatures kickin', back biting in sin Antagonistic opposition rules All qualified to call each other fools Love til your heart’s sore Pull foes up off the floor No other way to go and sin no more Love enemies in war Forgive though hurt before No other way to go and sin no more This here heart’s been healed and sealed in love But I’m a liar if I say I’m all done I’ll be the last to say that I’m not in need of change The sin in my soul is before me everyday Love til your heart’s sore Pull foes up off the floor No other way to go and sin no more Love enemies in war Forgive though hurt before No other way to go and sin no more

The Exorcist 05:14
There are bitter winds howlin’ For a crevice to fill Finding desolate houses With a drafty chill From lands without water, They come blowin’ back To old homes kept in order With the rest of their pack There’s more to this life than we’d like to say is in sight A dark and light, demon and divine outside I’ll live for the exorcist Made my life worth living I lived a life of unrest This world had my possessed He kicked down the door to my house And he threw those demons out He knelt down and called me son bid me follow him and come No room in this inn for the foe’s evil schemes of sin I know I’m only blood and bone but my landlord’s the Holy Ghost my oak limbs are creaking like the mayflower, I’m bending under power; Darts and arrows flame alight but by God, I’m airtight. Check my breastplate, Belt around my waist; Faith, my carapace Sword of the word Rest assured of it’s sharp edge Against forces of darkness It protects No vacancy I’m completely tenanted By the life so sweet of my dear Holy Spirit

about

Our first release, Please Don't Feed the Animals, is a heavy album. Love and joy find their moments over the course of the nine songs, no doubt. But when songs wrestle with the tragedies of World War II, consequences of relational commitment, porn, and doubt in God, the straws on the camel's back add up. And yet, in spite of the weight, there is a warmth to the album's gravity. I found healing and affirmation in the writing, the recording, and the playback of My Pilot. I needed to sing with and through the burdens of Yesteryear. My heart found rest in the confusion of Little Boy. Ironically, these songs provided a rocky path to taking a load off of my soul.
When the album was finished, it soon became apparent that these songs were meant to be recorded, perhaps more than they were meant to be played live. Ethan, Collin, Alicia, Laura, and myself found the songs difficult to communicate in a live setting. Hardly any time had passed before I began writing songs with a new goal in mind: lighthearted songs with messages that could pass easily from band to listener, be it in a coffeeshop, iphone speaker, church, car stereo, or dive bar. Through the Thicket makes fun a priority, and it sequels Animals quite nicely, I think. These songs may come across as superficial, poppy, and homey in comparison to Animals, which is not all unintended. Abounding with hooks and countermelodies, Thicket wants to catch your ear with a burden that is light and easy. The opening song sets the an easy tone, singing "Stepping along the straight and the narrow, carrying each others joys and sorrows..." The overall feeling of the album is that of a business man in a ball pit: serious, but smilingly not so. Even songs like Love's Goodbye, which talks about the dark demise of burying oneself alive under an accumulation of possessions, communicates through chirpy ukuleles and bouncy, island-esque vibes.
A golden thread in Thicket is the message of God's love for us, which spurs us to love our friends and enemies. This was no doubt inspired by my first year of marriage to Laura. Marriage is by no means the end-all, do-or-die, creamy-center-to-the-Cadbury-egg-of-human-existence, but it is a remarkable window that shows the acceptance, the devotion, and the life changing love of God.
Through the Thicket is not the broody, heavy hitter that Animals is. Instead, it turns up the AC on a hot day, grabs a SpongeBob push pop from the freezer, and enjoys the company of friend and foe alike. Have a seat and enjoy.
